Umatilla

Umatilla County, 97882

Founded as Umatilla Landing in 1864, Umatilla became an important trade and shipping center during the gold rush. Located at the confluence of the Umatilla and Columbia rivers the community became a cross roads. The land away from the rivers was desert before the great irrigation projects of the 20th century so the U.S. Army saw fit to take a large chuck of it and make an army depot. Since the location is rather isolated they have historically, and still do, store some rather nasty stuff here. Chemical warfare material, bombs and ammunition have to be stored somewhere I suppose. Fortunately all of that army stuff is well out of town and helps out by supporting the local employment base. Umatilla is a very pretty town. If you are looking for a nice place to move to this could be it.
