Elgin
Union County, 97827
Jewel of the Blue Mountains
This is the home of the famous Elgin Stampede. The small town rodeos we have happened across have been great fun. They are mostly local affairs with local people and a smattering of "pro" rodeo guys and gals who work the circuit. Several small towns have made names for themselves with their rodeos, among them St. Paul, Sisters, Molalla and Elgin. As with many Oregon towns, logging used to be big in Elgin, but now that has mostly gone away. In 1911 the city built a combined City Hall and Opera house. The first use of the theatre was the high school play of 1912. Both functions are still active today and the building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
