Hundred Valleys of the Umpqua

Douglas County

Winchester

Douglas County, 97459

Winchester is a small town just north of Roseburg on I-5 on the banks of the North Umpqua river. It was the main settlement in the Umpqua Valley including being the county seat until 1854 when Roseburg snatched that claim to fame. The name is easily confused with Winchester Bay but this place is far up stream from the ocean. Winchester has a dam on the North Umpqua which makes a nice lake. The dam also impedes the Salmon runs and produces some spectacular sights as the big fish try to get around or over the dam. This is the type of small dam which probably will be removed in the next 20 to 50 years despite the fact that being built in 1890 it is on the national historic register.
