Hundred Valleys of the Umpqua
Douglas County
The Umpqua river system drains a huge area, but there are no broad flat valleys. Every bend in the river does however produce a small valley, and there are many. I grew up in this area in Myrtle Creek. We depended until the late 1950's on timber and sawmills. In the mid-1950's the government subsidized the installation of a nickle mine and smelter at Riddle and many of the men went to work there. Alas, the nickle mining did not last much longer than the timber. Making a living is still a tough go here.
One the other hand the mountains and valleys are beautiful and inviting. The weather is mild and nearly wind-free. I still feel good inside when I drive those old roads.
