If you get away from I-84 Burns is the only town in Harney or Malheur county that is more than a wide spot in the road. Close to Burns is the dramatic Steens Mountain, a gigantic fault block rising over 10,000' in elevation (Burns itself is about 4000'). Also nearby, is the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge where hundreds of species of birds nest and visit.
