Lapine is now a Bend bedroom community but it has quite a history on its own. Despite being settled in the 19th century the area officially incorporated only in 2006. This is jack pine country. This whole area is covered with volcanic ash from area volcanoes so the unpaved access roads are extremely dusty in the summer. When we used to hunt mule deer here as kids we saw the jack pine as worthless brush. Now the mills have figured out how to use them. LaPine has more outdoor recreational opportunities than you can imagine. They have lakes and mountains, snow and sun, all nearby.
